Two clocks are running against each other in India this week. In the north-west the monsoon's withdrawal stays favourable over Rajasthan, Punjab and Saurashtra-Kutch, which opens harvest windows; on the east coast a deep depression lands on Sep 23-24 with heavy rain reaching inland across Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand, which closes them. In southern Brazil the damage is already counted — more than 140 municipalities, with hail striking about 80 percent of Tres Palmeiras — and the assessment window opens as the red lifts. South-central Chile takes about 100 mm in 48 hours onto orchard and pasture ground with runoff amplified by the high freezing level. In the United States the question is field access and low-water crossings on saturated soil rather than the rainfall total, and on the Dalmatian coast the heat has broken back to a window peak near 32.5 °C, easing irrigation demand.
