The coast, the night and the districts were named two days ahead, and tonight is the night. A deep depression sits near 18.0 N 84.7 E this morning, about 150 km south of Gopalpur and 150 km east-north-east of Visakhapatnam, moving at about 8 km/h. Forecasters expect it to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur tonight, carrying 55 to 65 km/h gusting 75, then slow near the shore and turn north-north-west toward Chhattisgarh. It is not forecast to reach cyclone strength, and the name some outlets have attached to it is not an official one.
The wind is not the number to watch. The rain is. Red warnings, more than 20 cm, cover Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam through Thursday, then shift west to Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri into Friday: hill districts of the Eastern Ghats, where the rain runs off fast. Across the border, six Andhra districts from Visakhapatnam to Parvathipuram Manyam carry a red warning for flash floods. The cross-agency exposure board puts about 8.0 million people inside tropical-storm-force winds, none inside anything stronger. That sizes the rain-and-wind footprint, not a hurricane.
The coast has already acted. Schools are shut in seven Odisha districts and six in Andhra Pradesh, 33 state disaster-response teams are deployed, and Bangladesh's ports keep a local warning signal No. 3. Tonight, district officers open shelters, railway controllers decide which trains to hold, and grid crews stage for the night crossing. No casualties had been reported when this page was compiled.
