New Zealand — the South Island cleared, and the front hands off north

The front cleared the South Island, all severe-weather watches expired, SH87 between Middlemarch and Outram and SH96 across the Oreti Plains reopened, and about 5 cm had settled at Mount Cook village. The front now moves to the North Island, with rain late Thursday into Friday over Wellington, Taranaki, Auckland and Northland.
