Once a year the calendar and the weather collide on purpose, and this is that weekend. Silver Week puts Japan's crowds on the move exactly as Dujuan's rain arrives — Ogasawara Saturday, the Izu Islands Sunday, eastern Japan including Tokyo behind them, on soil at about 365 percent of normal since Sep 1 — which makes outdoor-event and festival go/no-go, crowd-flow and transport-contingency calls for organisers whose attendance is holiday-dependent, and the honest framing is rain and ground, not wind. At the other end of the board, the American South turns hot into the weekend with records challenged and heat advisories 12 to 15 at a heat index of 105 to 109 °F — a hydration, shade and start-time question for outdoor venues, on the same week the Southwest was under water. Europe's orange criticality in Liguria and Emilia-Romagna and Brazil's yellow storm and hail window over Minas Gerais are the smaller, sharper versions of the same call.
